What is “free speech”?
I saw a tweet that stated:
“Don’t be fooled. Big Tech isn’t shutting down accounts due to ‘risk.’ They’re trying to control what you READ. What you THINK. What you BELIEVE. They’re after one thing: control. Because control means power. Don’t let them win.”
I’m not a politician.
I’m not a scholar of the law.
I’m not even American.
I’m someone that pays a lot of attention to technology, consumer behavior, and media.
I’m someone that used to publish print magazines, and was a music/culture journalist in the pre-historic ages (before the web). …
Do I work if I’m not being paid?
All the time.
What I do professionally is a major part of who I am.
It’s how I define myself.
I am always learning.
I am always reading.
I am always writing.
I am always looking to acquire more knowledge.
I am always looking to learn new skills.
I am always looking for ways to be the best that I can be as a professional.
My salary is not the only reason that I work.
My time spent delivering the result of my work is not the only reason that…
Don’t just sit at your desk.
Get out into the world.
There are no blank pages staring back at you out in the wild.
The canvases out in the world are filled with inspiration and imagery.
Ideas come from the unexpected.
Ideas come from the mundane.
Do things that you find interesting.
Do things that you find unexpected.
Do things that you find mundane.
Wandering is the path.
Bring a pen.
Bring a notebook.
Bring a willingness to be a detective.
Leave the compass back home.
Take notes about everything.
Everything that is said.
Everything that the senses capture.
How do we start fresh?
How do we fix the broken?
How do we success when we are scared?
How do we show and tell?
How do we love and protect?
How do we stay in each other’s lives?
How do we be equals?
How do we find love?
How do we write free?
How do we breathe and stretch?
How do we keep playing games?
How do we build with care?
How do we stop the stress?
How do we move to new?
How do we with listen and observe?
How do we family?
How do we find our space?
How do we stop to start?
How do we not hide?
How do we sleep tight?
How do we…
Voice is going to change everything.
As you watch the chaos listen for the word “contactless.”
Don’t touch anything.
How will we move through the world?
Everything will be more contactless.
The assumption is that the tap on mobile will drive this.
But not much longer after that.
Look to voice.
Think about smart speakers.
Think about smart audio.
Think about voice assistant technology.
It’s already everywhere.
It’s on your phone.
It’s on your computer.
It’s on your watch.
It’s in your car.
It’s in your electronics.
It’s in your home.
It’s in your kitchen.
It’s in your living room.
It’s in your bedroom.
It’s not what you think.
It’s not about starting a podcast.
It’s not about posting articles on LinkedIn.
It’s not about streaming live on Facebook.
It’s not about building a following on Twitter…
…or <insert a social media platform here>…
It’s not about getting media appearances.
It’s not about getting famous.
It’s about creating.
It’s about sharing.
It’s about being human.
It’s about connecting.
It’s about community.
It’s about telling stories.
It’s about people caring enough to buy from you.
It’s about people caring enough to buy into you.
First, decide what you like…
That is the question.
If you read the major stories that were recently published in The Atlantic (Jeff Bezos’s Master Plan) and/or The New Yorker (Is Amazon Unstoppable?), this is the new(wish) position of the media: Amazon is bad for business. Jeff Bezos is bad/evil. I wonder how true this is? I wonder what the consumers think? I wonder if the stock market feels the same way as the media does? The media is under a lot of fire these days as well. It seems to me like the media should be, after reading those two pieces on Amazon. I’m…
Everyone wants to podcast. Everyone wants to be a guest on a podcast. Podcasting is the new content marketing.
I can’t tell you how many interviews I’ve been involved with since the mid-eighties, but it is in the thousands. I’m not bragging or hyping here. My main podcast, Six Pixels of Separation, has been running since 2006 with over 700 episodes, and my passion project podcast, Groove — The No Treble Podcast (where I am trying to build the largest oral history of electric bass players) has been running for over five years with over 60 episodes. Beyond that, I…
Life has a funny way of giving you perspective.
2018 was the year of “books” for me. I decided that I would track and pay close attention to book reading. I was embarrassed, because in prior years, my passion for reading books had waned. I would have none of it this year. I’ve read a lot books (about 70 in total). Part of making the decision to read more was coupled with another decision to get physically healthier. I combined the two forces by taking a very early morning walk (you can see some of my escapades on Instagram) coupled…
Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It’s not a long segment — about 10 minutes every week — about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you’re interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what’s going on in the digital world. I’m really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it…
